Neutering

Your pet can be back at home recovering with you the same day as their surgery

Neutering, or de-sexing an animal refers to the removal of their sexual organs

You may already know that neutering prevents animals from falling pregnant. However, did you know that there are a number of other benefits to having your pet de-sexed? If you don’t plan to breed from your pet, neutering is the most responsible action to take. Not only does a litter of puppies or kittens require lots of hard work and attention, but they may also require more of a financial commitment than you bargained for.

A female animal is spayed by having her ovaries and uterus removed. The benefits to having a female animal neutered are:

  • Prevention of cancer of the uterus and ovaries
  • Prevention of uterine infections (Pyometra) in older age
  • Prevention of unwanted pregnancies
  • No longer coming in to season which prevents bleeding, unwanted attention and mating behaviour from males

A male animal has his testes removed and is therefore castrated. The benefits to having a male animal neutered are:

  • Prevention of testicular cancer
  • Reduction of the incidence of prostatic diseases, including cancer
  • Prevention or reduction in aggressive hormonal behaviour
  • Prevention of urine marking and roaming

When done well, neutering is a straight forward procedure, and we aim to make it as pain free as possible. We use a special anaesthetic agent called sevoflurane that provides very little to no post-operative hangover, high levels of pain relief both during and after surgery and the surgery is done in a sterile, specially designated operating theatre. Your pet will then be given plenty of TLC in a species-specific ward before being returned to you at the end of the day.
